How Much Does it Cost to Insure a Teenage Driver?
Rates vary widely depending on address, vehicle(s), credit, tickets/accidents, coverage and number of teen drivers, however it unfortunately can be expensive as statistics show that 16 – 19 year olds are up to four times more likely to be involved in a car accident than older drivers.
Should my Teen Carry Their own Policy?
Insurers frown on this practice, and it typically will not save you money in the long run. Insurance rules require all drivers within a household to be listed on all auto insurance policies within that household, since there is always a chance that those within a household might share vehicles. Therefore even if the teen has their own auto insurance policy, they should be still listed on their parents’ policy, which would defeat the purpose. Also, the teen would lose many of the discounts the parents are receiving for multiple policies and good credit. Typically the only way this is cheaper is if the teen carries much lower auto coverage, which is not recommended, as the parents could then be exposed.
What Discounts are Available for Teens?
Many insurers offer good student discounts for those students earning a 3.0 GPA or above. Some insurers also offer discounts for those that complete a workbook as well as usage-based discounts. In addition to discounts specifically for teens, there are other options available for decreasing premiums such as bundling policies, paying in full, increasing deductibles, and lowering limits (which generally is not recommended.)
When Should I add my Child to my Auto Insurance Policy?
You need not add a child to your car insurance until they receive their license or permit. Some insurance companies want teens added when they get their permit, while others, their license. It is best to discuss timing with your agent.
Why Should I add my Teen Driver to my Car Insurance?
There are consequences for not adding a licensed/permitted driver to your auto insurance policy. Some insurers may reduce coverage after an accident, while others may deny coverage altogether. There is also the chance that your policy could be cancelled.
Must I add my Teen Driver if They Live Elsewhere?
This depends on your insurance company and their guidelines, but generally if the teen lives elsewhere, and is covered under another auto insurance policy, then need not be added to your policy.
