Why is Hyundai Insurance and Kia Insurance hard to obtain?
Certain Kia and Hyundai models are missing protective features, and social media posts have offered advice on how to exploit these vulnerabilities. Even if thieves are unable to steal the vehicle, they still may vandalize the vehicle during the attempt.
How bad is it?
According to data from the Highway Loss Data Institute, there has been a 1000% increase Kia and Hyundai thefts between 2020 and 2023. Hyundai’s and Kia’s are seven times more likely to be stolen than vehicles from other manufacturers.
How does this impact Auto Insurance?
Many carry comprehensive coverage, which covers theft and vandalism. When vehicles with comprehensive coverage are stolen or vandalized, insurance companies will pay for repairs or replacement, in addition to a rental car in some cases. If insurers are paying out vastly more in claims for certain vehicles, they must take action to stem the losses.
How are insurance carriers addressing the problem?
Some insurers are raising rates, specifically comprehensive coverage rates. Others will not write new car insurance policies on Hyundai’s or Kia’s. The most extreme response is to actual cancel (non-renew) policies. Many carriers are already losing money for several reasons, and are more interested in restoring profitability than growing. Therefore they have no qualms about cancelling insurance for Kia’s, and insurance for Hyundai’s.
What if my Hyundai or Kia has additional security features?
Insurers generally focus on solely the year, make and model, and will not take into account additional security features. This is because it is difficult to prove whether the security features were installed, and because it is difficult to determine whether the security features will actually make a difference.
